Atma-Sphere MA-2 Mk 3.3 — OTL Monoblock Pair | Factory-Serviced June 2025 | 3-Year Warranty
For sale, a pair of Atma-Sphere MA-2 Mk 3.3 monoblock amplifiers — among the most celebrated and technically singular amplifiers in the history of high-end audio. This is not a casual listing. The MA-2 is a statement that very few listeners ever get the opportunity to live with.
These units were factory-serviced by Atma-Sphere and carry a full 3-year manufacturer warranty valid through May 2028. This is an exceptional level of assurance for a used purchase at this level.
What makes the MA-2 different from everything else
The MA-2 is a true OTL — Output TransformerLess — design. Where virtually every other amplifier, tube or solid-state, inserts an output transformer between the circuit and the speaker, the MA-2 connects directly. The output transformer is one of the most significant sources of coloration, phase error, and bandwidth limitation in conventional amplifiers. Removing it entirely is technically demanding and only a handful of manufacturers in the world have mastered it. Atma-Sphere has been doing it longer and better than anyone.
The result is a directness and immediacy that is simply not available elsewhere. Transients arrive with a physical authority that makes conventional amplifiers — regardless of price — sound slightly blurred by comparison. The harmonic structure of voices, strings, and brass is reproduced with a completeness and accuracy that reveals how much other amplifiers, however fine, are filtering and shaping the signal.
At 220 watts per channel from a fully balanced, fully differential all-tube circuit, the MA-2 also happens to be one of the most powerful pure tube amplifiers ever built for commercial sale.
Comparisons — where the MA-2 stands
The audiophile landscape at this level is populated by extraordinary machines, each with a genuine identity. Having heard most of them:
- The Audio Research Reference 750 SEL is a magnificent amplifier — but its output transformers impose a ceiling on low-frequency grip and spatial openness that the MA-2 simply does not have. The stage is wider, the bass more defined and controlled.
- Against the Viva Aurora or Wavac HE-833, the MA-2 retains every gram of the organic, living quality that makes SET amplification so compelling — but adds authority, dynamic range, and grip that single-ended designs at any power level cannot match.
- The Gryphon Apex Mono and Dan D'Agostino Relentless are among the finest solid-state amplifiers ever made, with dynamics that are genuinely startling. The MA-2 meets them there — and then adds something that transistors, at any price point, do not produce: a harmonic richness on acoustic instruments and voices that sounds less like reproduction and more like presence.
- The Boulder 3050 and Soulution 701 are exceptional on transients and resolution. On the acoustic truth of a voice or a string quartet, the MA-2 is in a different dimension.
- The Kondo Gakuoh is one of the most beautiful-sounding amplifiers ever made. It is also severely limited in power and load compatibility. The MA-2 carries the same sense of rightness and tonal naturalness, without compromise.
Speaker compatibility
OTL amplifiers are sometimes mischaracterised as requiring high-impedance loads. The MA-2, with its exceptional output stage design, drives electrostatic panels, ribbon systems, and complex or low-impedance loads with complete authority. The Sound Lab electrostatic panels visible in the photographs are among the most demanding loads in high-end audio. The MA-2 drove them without hesitation.
Worldwide shipping from Paris. 220V (can be converted to 110V if necessary). Original shipping crates available.
